Courier terms & delivery liability
This page explains, in plain language, who actually carries your parcel, what happens if something goes wrong, and what data gets shared to make delivery possible. Courier delivery is not switched on yet — today every sale is collected in person, and these terms apply from the moment it is.
Not in use yet
Courier delivery is being set up and is currently switched off, so no sale on Handover is being couriered. Every sale today is handed over in person, with the buyer’s money held in escrow until they confirm with their PIN. Everything below describes how delivery will work once it is switched on, and is published in advance so there are no surprises on the day.
Who carries the parcel
Handover contracts a courier for each order. Deliveries are carried by The Courier Guy. Pricing shown to buyers is based on The Courier Guy’s published rates so the numbers you see reflect what delivery actually costs.
Liability cover
- Every parcel carries R1 000 of cover included by default.
- For items priced above that, Handover automatically adds declared-value cover — the cost is passed straight through to the buyer at 2% of the value above R1 000 (plus VAT), with no Handover margin on it.
- Total cover per parcel is capped at R30 000. Any value above that cap is not covered, however much cover is purchased.
Claims
Report any damage or shortage within 48 hours of delivery, with photos of the item and packaging. Claims made after that window are unlikely to be honoured by the courier.
What courier cover typically excludes
Standard courier liability cover does not reach certain categories of goods, regardless of declared value or packaging. If you’re selling or buying any of the following, treat it as uninsured in transit:
- glass, ceramic or perspex items
- jewellery or precious metals
- liquids
- batteries
- motor vehicle parts
- wood or furniture
- solar, generator or inverter equipment
- perishables or frozen goods
- cash, documents or negotiable instruments
- second-hand electronics not in original packaging
- artwork or antiques
- weapons or ammunition
- live animals
Parcels are also limited to 1m × 1m × 1m and 50kg.
Your information (POPIA)
To collect and deliver a parcel, Handover shares the pickup and dropoff names, addresses, and contact numbers you provide with the courier network handling that order — only what’s needed to fulfil the delivery. This is processed in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). See our privacy policy for how Handover itself handles your information.
